When I was 19 years old I wrote a novel (like you do). This novel was entitled YONDER. It bagged me my first agent, though sadly not a publisher. However I did collect a lot of very nice rejection letters from people who liked my characters and the quirky style of the book...they just weren't very confident that it would sell. Never mind.
Six years later I am still an aspiring novelist. I have a new agent and a new novel that is currently being submitted to publishing houses. Even though I remain fond of YONDER I have come to realise that it is not the best book to be launching a literary career with. However after all my hard work I would really like it to be read by a few more people. So if any LJ users can spare the time I would be very honoured. To wet your appetite here are some encouraging comments from publishers.
Collins Children’s Books
“YONDER is certainly a very original imaginative work. The author has created an interesting world (predominantly by the quirky use of footnotes) which could be the Britain of the near future or a contemporary Britain in a parallel universe. Quirky pretty much describes everything about the book; the style, the characters and storyline. Its strong scenes of sex, drug taking, breaking and entering, vandalism and some violence make it gritty, controversial material.”
Oxford University Press
“Thanks for sending this. You’re right, it is rather curious and none the worse for that – distinctiveness shines out of every page. This is clearly a writer who very much has her own voice.”
Scholastic
“Thank you for submitting YONDER, which I enjoyed. I think the author has some original ideas and a distinctive voice, and sets up her parallel world most successfully…it would be hard to know where to place this kind of experimental debut.”
Pan Macmillan
“This writer certainly has a lot of potential. There is some really lovely writing in YONDER and I enjoyed the quirky tone and descriptions. I thought the characterisations were strong, especially Odie who was wonderfully fun and entertaining.”
London Independent Books
“YONDER is highly imaginative and evocative. The use of language is original and exciting. I liked Llew’s mental journey and felt it was coherent and logical. All in all, a very talented writer.”
Many thanks to Jellyfrog who designed my lovely banner!!
